Pre-Conference Training Offerings
Corporate Responsibility 101
In the “reset” economy, many companies see their investments and activities related to corporate responsibility (CR) as fundamental to their long-term success. In this full-day training, BSR will build on over 15 years of experience defining and leading companies into the field of CR. This training is focused on defining the basic parameters and expectations for CR and sustainability related to multinational companies. This training will help you clearly define CR and sustainability as it relates to your company, understand the business drivers for CR performance, articulate the factors necessary to define the scope of CR for your company, identify important trends in CR and sustainability relevant to your company, and define the core functions and practices all companies must maintain for successful CR.
Full-Day Training
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Who Should Attend?
Corporate responsibility practitioners who are new to the field and those from companies that are at the early stages of CR and sustainability. This training is intended for company practitioners only.
Corporate Responsibility and ROI in Hard Economic Times (Updated Training Description)
Today, it is more important than ever to focus your company's resources on the most material sustainability priorities. Sustainability managers are hard-pressed to explain and measure the benefits of their efforts and link them to overall corporate objectives and strategy. In this half-day session, you will learn an outcomes-based approach to sustainability strategy and measurement that will help you identify and assess corporate objectives that may relate to sustainability issues; align sustainability programs and resources with corporate strategy; measure and demonstrate the ROI—in term of both business and social value—of your sustainability work; and communicate your results in terms that are meaningful to a variety of audiences, including corporate leaders. Participants will leave the training with a strong understanding of how sustainability contributes to the top and bottom lines, and how to bolster the case for company sustainability programs. This training will be led in conjunction with BSR’s relevant project partners and Mission Measurement CEO Jason Saul.

Local Economic Development Strategies
For many companies, especially those in the extractives industry, a robust local supplier and business development strategy can help meet community expectations, address project requirements, lower costs, and mitigate risks. However, identifying potential suppliers and building capacity to meet business performance requirements can pose challenges, especially in a developing country context. In this half-day training led by BSR’s energy and extractives experts, you will learn how to make the business case for developing local suppliers, develop successful local economic programs using strategic and field-based tools, explore best practices in training, and discover opportunities for community development and social investment.

The training will conclude by examining how companies can take a lead on this critical policy issue. In this training you will develop analytical frameworks on climate change to take away and apply.

Responding to Water-Related Risk
Companies today are expected to assess their water footprints and develop an appropriate set of responses that address water-related risk within their direct operations, supply chains, and the watersheds in which they operate. The shifting water landscape also requires a proactive strategy that takes into account both volumetric impacts and affects on local communities and watersheds. This half-day, interactive training—which draws on the best of BSR’s water strategy development projects and our role in corporate water stewardship efforts around the world—will give you a clear understanding of how to conduct and interpret a water footprint, develop responses to reduce water-related risk, and prioritize management efforts in setting strategic goals.

For most companies, a significant portion of their carbon footprint lies outside their direct control. For consumer goods, high-tech, and other industries, for example, up to 60 percent of their carbon impact may reside upstream in their supply chain. How are you leveraging your value chain to achieve your climate goals? This session will draw on company best practices, as well as relevant global initiatives such as the Carbon Disclosure Project and WRI Scope 3 initiative. Learning from peers and BSR's experiences, you will leave with a clear understanding of why and how to approach tracking carbon in your supply chain.
