Aron Cramer

Aron Cramer

Aron is recognized globally as an authority on corporate responsibility by leaders in business and NGOs and by his peers in the field. He travels the world delivering insightful advice on achieving sustainable business success to C-level executives of BSR's 250 member companies and other global brands, at major events like the World Economic Forum in Davos and to a range of media outlets. Under his leadership, BSR has doubled its staff and significantly expanded its global presence. Aron joined BSR in 1995 as the founding director of its Business and Human Rights Program, and in 2002, he opened BSR's Paris office, where he worked until becoming President and CEO in 2004. Previously, Aron practiced law in San Francisco and worked as a journalist at ABC News in New York.

John Donahoe

John Donahoe

As eBay President and CEO, John Donahoe has global responsibility for growing each of the company's business units, including eBay Marketplaces and PayPal. A proud eBay Green Team member, Donahoe has been instrumental in integrating environmental sustainability throughout the company, including partnering with eBay's 88 million active users to promote an ethic of greener, smarter consumption. Donahoe joined eBay as President of eBay Marketplaces in 2005, at which time he ran eBay's global ecommerce businesses, which account for a large percentage of the company's revenues.

 

Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley

Elizabeth Frawley Bagley

Ambassador Elizabeth Frawley Bagley was sworn in on June 18, 2009. From 1997 to 2001, she served as Senior Advisor under a former Secretary of State, in which capacity she established and headed the Office of Media Programming Acquisition for the newly independent Balkan states. Bagley also served as a Senate liaison for NATO Enlargement. From 1994 to 1997, she served as the U.S. Ambassador to Portugal. Upon her departure from Portugal, she received meritorious awards from the Portuguese Navy and Air Force, as well as the “Grand Cross of Prince Henry the Navigator,” the President of Portugal’s highest civilian commendation. As an attorney specializing in trade and international law, she was Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University in Washington until January 1993.

Fadi Ghandour

Founder and CEO • Aramex International

Fadi Ghandour

For the past 27 years, Fadi Ghandour has held the positions of Founder and CEO of Aramex International, a logistics and transportation company based in the Middle East that was the first Arab firm to go public on the NASDAQ stock exchange. Since its beginnings, Aramex has been well known in the Middle East for its focus on sustainability, and as the company has grown, Ghandour has aligned his firm's corporate responsibility efforts with global standards. In 2006, Aramex was the first company in the region to publish an annual sustainability report, and last year, the company joined the United Nations Global Compact. Aramex has been heralded by Thomas L. Friedman in his book The World is Flat as a model for companies benefiting from the ‘flattening’ of the world through globalization. Ghandour is a Founding Partner with Maktoob.com, the world's largest online Arab community, and he founded Ruwwad Development, a regional corporate social responsibility initiative.

 

Hannah Jones

Hannah Jones

As Nike's Vice President of Sustainable Business and Innovation, as well as the lead in the company's Government and Public Affairs strategy, Hannah Jones directs the team mandated with helping the company to thrive in a sustainable economy through closed-loop business models. Her team's role is to fuel sustainable innovation, embed sustainability into the heart of the business model, and mobilize key constituencies (employees, consumers, policy makers, civil society, and other industries) to enable a rapid transition to a sustainable economy. Before joining Nike, Jones served as a consultant to Microsoft and Kimberly-Clark on both companies' community affairs programs.

John Kao

Dubbed "Mr. Creativity" by the Economist, John Kao is considered a leading authority on innovation, large-scale transformation, and emerging technologies. Kao is regularly sought out by senior leaders of both public and private sector organizations as a trusted advisor in the development of innovation strategies and action plans. He is Chairman and Founder of the Institute for Large Scale Innovation, whose i20 group is an association of national innovation leaders from around the world. Kao is also author of Jamming, a BusinessWeek best-seller, and Innovation Nation, which was published in 2007.

Ernst Ligteringen

Ernst Ligteringen

Since 2002, Ernst Ligteringen has held his current position as Chief Executive of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), an international nonprofit organization whose vision is to make reporting on economic, environmental, and social performance by all organizations as mainstream as financial reporting. Ligteringen holds overall responsibility for GRI, including secretariat operations and the coordination of the worldwide GRI network of active stakeholders who participate in the GRI’s governance, working groups, reviews, and consultation processes. He is also a member of GRI’s multi-stakeholder Board of Directors. Previously, Ligteringen had a 23-year career in various nongovernmental and international organizations, including postings and missions in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Rosabeth Moss Kanter

Rosabeth Moss Kanter holds the Ernest L. Arbuckle Professorship at Harvard Business School, where she specializes in strategy, innovation, and leadership for change. Through teaching, writing, and direct consultation to major corporations and governments, Kanter has used her strategic and practical insights to guide leaders of large and small organizations worldwide for more than 25 years. The former Editor of Harvard Business Review (1989-1992), Kanter has been named to lists of the “50 most powerful women in the world” (Times of London) and the “50 most influential business thinkers in the world” (Accenture and Thinkers 50 research). In 2001, she received the Academy of Management’s Distinguished Career Award for her scholarly contributions to management knowledge, and in 2002 she was named the “Intelligent Community Visionary of the Year” by the World Teleport Association.

Diane Osgood

Diane Osgood

Diane takes the lead in moving global companies, multilateral institutions and NGOs worldwide toward sustainability. For the past two decades, her work has included everything from initiating codes of conduct and making the business case for poverty alleviation to creating groundbreaking multi-sector partnerships. Diane's work focuses on corporate strategy, creating new businesses offerings for underprivileged groups, future trends, food and agriculture, and the role of new media in sustainability. As the head of BSR's CSR Strategy department, Diane integrates the efforts of the Research & Development, Grants, Communications, and Conference teams to deliver innovative projects and lasting impacts on environmental, human rights, economic development and governance issues. Renowned in her field and widely published in both business and academic journals, Diane earned her doctorate in Environmental Economics and Development Studies at the London School of Economics, her M.Sc. in Development Studies (Economics) at the London School of Economics, and her B.A. in Economics at the University of San Francisco. She began her career as a portfolio manager at Merrill Lynch in Switzerland.

Ben Verwaayen

Ben Verwaaven

As CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, Ben Verwaayen is committed to building "significant and sustainable value" to his company's shareholders, customers, and employees. In a recent keynote address, he expressed his confidence in the power of sustainability to carry us through uncertain times. "We are not going to rebuild what has been in the past, but build what is sustainable for the future," he said. Prior to joining Alcatel-Lucent in 2008, Verwaayen held leadership positions at BT Group, Lucent Technologies, KPN, and ITT. Verwaayen was appointed an Independent, Non-Executive Director of UPS in March 2005 and has been made an Officer of the Orange Order-Nassau and an Honorary Knight of the British Empire. He also has received the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur medal. Verwaayen is a Dutch national and graduated with a master's degree in law and international politics from the State University of Utrecht, Holland.

 

Ricardo Young

Chairman • Ethos Institute

Ricardo Young

Ricardo Young is the Chairman of the Ethos Institute and President of UniEthos, the educational initiative of Ethos. His expertise includes capacity building in the areas of corporate social responsibility and sustainable development. He is an author of a number of books, including From Yázigi to Internexus: A Travel Along the 50 Years of a Brazilian Franchise. He has been widely published and was one of the first leaders to formulate the pillars of the fourth generation of the franchise system: the Learning Network Franchise. He is also Ethos’ representative at the Global Compact, a member of the Brazilian Presidential Council of Social and Economical Development and former National Coordinator of PNBE, a national think tank that focuses on business citizenship.

Zhang Yue

Chairman & CEO • BROAD Air Conditioning

Zhang Yue

After a career as a teacher and librarian, Zhang Yue founded the privately owned, China-based company BROAD Air Conditioning in 1988. A proponent of the belief that “only by using technologies responsibly can it benefit human beings,” Zhang is working on simple, energy-saving air-quality technologies that he hopes will reduce 15 percent of global greenhouse emissions to ensure a healthy planet and extend human life expectancy by 30 years. Zhang led the effort to develop China's first “non-electric chiller,” using fuels as the energy input. Later, he developed the world’s first indoor air-conditioning unit with an electrostatic dust-cleaning function. He also has developed other products that have triggered a global health revolution in air. Zhang’s technological innovations have put BROAD non-electric chillers at the forefront of the global air-conditioning industry, especially in the field of energy conservation.

Rebecca Adamson

Founder and President • First Peoples Worldwide

Rebecca Adamson is the Founder and President of First Peoples Worldwide, serving indigenous peoples outside the United States. She is actively working with the World Bank to create the Global Indigenous Peoples’ Facility Fund and is also the Founder and past President of First Nations Development Institute, serving Native Americans, native Hawaiians, and Alaska natives. Her life’s work has been advocating for indigenous peoples by working directly with indigenous and tribal communities for culturally appropriate development and legislation to establish new standards of accountability. She is the author of many articles and papers, including The Color of Wealth: The Story Behind the U.S. Racial Wealth Divide, a book coauthored by United for a Fair Economy.

Farid Baddache

With more than 10 years of CSR strategy and management experience in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, Farid Baddache brings his global expertise to BSR's Paris office as a leading authority in sustainability. Prior to joining BSR, he bridged stakeholder concerns with business realities as a CSR strategy/management consultant and project manager. He has worked closely with various industrial leaders, international organizations, NGOs, unions, and public authorities to build a shared vision, where environmental and social issues are key market forces and new opportunities for value creation.

Christine Bader

Advisor to the UN Special Representative • Business & Human Rights

Christine Bader is an Advisor to Professor John Ruggie in his capacity as UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General for business and human rights. From 1999 - 2008, she was with BP plc, during which she worked in Indonesia, China, and the UK. With stints in corporate planning and investor relations, she spent most of her time with the company improving management of its social impacts. She has also served as a corps member with City Year; the first Teaching Fellow in Community Service at Phillips Academy in Andover; and a Special Assistant to the New York City Mayor's Chief of Staff and Deputy Mayor for Community Development and Business Services. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Kenan Institute for Ethics at Duke University and a Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Doug Bannerman

Senior Manager, Advisory Services • BSR

Doug Bannerman rounds out BSR's robust energy and extractives practices with hands-on work with clients in the oil and gas, energy, forestry, mining, and utility sectors. Recent successful projects include evaluating the impact of a mining company's sustainable development efforts on its stakeholder relationships and its internal management of social issues and community development initiatives. He also led a large utility company through the development and implementation of a CSR strategy, performance goals, and metrics. In addition to facilitating training workshops for clients on stakeholder engagement, CSR reporting, human rights, and security issues, Bannerman is co-manager of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights Secretariat with counterparts from London-based International Business Leaders Forum, and has co-chaired the Steering Committee since 2005.

Edward B. Barbier

John S. Bugas Professor of Economics • University of Wyoming

Edward B. Barbier has over 25 years experience as an environmental and resource economist, working on natural resource and development issues as well as the interface between economics and ecology. He has served as a consultant and policy analyst for a variety of national, international and non-governmental agencies, including many UN organizations and the World Bank. Barbier was formerly at the Environment Department, University of York, UK and previously served as Director of the London Environmental Economics Centre of the International Institute for Environment and Development and University College London. He appears in the 4th edition of Who's Who in Economics and has authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, written or edited seventeen books and published in popular journals.

Dost Bardouille-Crema

Dost Bardouille-Crema collaborates with companies in the development and implementation of practical management options to build positive, constructive relationships with local communities where they operate. Since 2000, the Corporate Engagement Project has worked with more than 60 companies around the world; the book Getting it Right: Making Corporate-Community Relations Work describes what they have learned from this work. Previously, Bardouille-Crema has researched and managed global health and international community development projects for several years within the Caribbean and Latin America.

Ayesha Barenblat

A core link in BSR's sustainable supply chain solutions, Ayesha Barenblat advises apparel, footwear, and retail companies in the development and implementation of successful CSR strategies throughout their key business processes. Her commitment to advancing human rights in global supply chains permeates her work at BSR, which includes managing the Beyond Monitoring initiative, developing HERproject partnerships in Pakistan, educating international buyers on the Better Factories Cambodia program, linking competitiveness to CSR in Peru, and working with manufacturers and buyers to address migrant labor issues in Jordan. She also works to improve suppliers' understanding of social compliance programs within the apparel sector in Pakistan and the electronics industry in China.

Shari Berenbach

President and CEO • Calvert Social Investment Foundation

Shari Berenbach presently manages nearly US$300 million in community investment assets raised from more than 4,500 private investors. A leader in the emerging community investment industry, she has more than 20 years of experience, spanning micro-credit and innovative approaches to finance. Previously, Berenbach worked for the International Finance Corporation and held private sector positions at Citibank and Salomon Brothers. She was one of the pioneers in the micro-credit field, working in more than two dozen countries, and she is the author of numerous articles related to international micro-finance and community investment.

Dolores Bernardo

Dolores Bernardo’s focus is on Google's inclusion, retention, and advancement programs. In this role, she works with Google's diversity council on various initiatives, including accessibility, flexibility and work-life balance, diversity learning and development, and career advancement programs. Prior to Google, Dolores was Director, Western Region, for Catalyst, the premier nonprofit organization that works to advance women in business, where she collaborated with companies like Intuit, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems. Chad Bolick

With years of international development experience, Chad Bolick drives BSR's project development and external relations with private foundations, the United States government, and other donor organizations. He consistently secures grant opportunities for BSR offices globally that promote and catalyze sustainable partnerships in emerging economies. Bolick also leads HERproject-BSR's factory-based initiative that addresses women's health needs in global supply chains by working with multinational companies, factories, local NGOs, and donors.

Michael Bzdak

Michael Bzdak manages Johnson & Johnson’s volunteer support program as well as philanthropic support of K-12 education, including a signature school-to-career program. In addition, he manages Johnson & Johnson’s corporate giving in New Jersey. He is also responsible for emerging initiatives in the arts and healing, and for building health care capacity. Bzdak has been an employee of Johnson & Johnson since 1990.

Jon Campbell

Jon Campbell manages Wells Fargo's Social Responsibility Group, which includes the company's Philanthropy, Community Development, Community Support, Corporate Supplier Diversity, and Environmental Affairs departments. In addition, Campbell serves as Chief Executive Officer, Minnesota Region, and Executive Vice President, Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. A 31-year veteran of the company, Campbell most recently had responsibility for Wells Fargo's Regional Banking Mergers and Acquisitions Program, along with his Minnesota CEO role. Previously, he was Great Lakes Regional President, overseeing Wells Fargo's retail and business banking operations in Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Mary Capozzi

As Senior Director of Corporate Responsibility for Best Buy, Mary Capozzi is driving the company’s strategy to reach Best Buy’s growth goals and business objectives through responsible business practices. Fritjof Capra

Physicist, Systems Theorist and Founding Director • Center for Ecoliteracy

Fritjof Capra, Ph.D., a physicist and systems theorist, is a founding director of the Berkeley, California-based Center for Ecoliteracy, which promotes ecology and systems thinking in primary and secondary education. He is the author of several international bestsellers, including The Web of Life and The Hidden Connections. His most recent book, The Science of Leonardo, was published in paperback by Anchor Books in December 2008.

Harry Charger

Spiritual Leader, Community Educator, Ceremonial Leader • Cheyenne River Reservation, Lakota

Lakota helper naca Harry Charger is from the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota and is a Sun Dance Leader, Wisdom Keeper, and a fluent Lakota speaker. Teaching the practice of compassion and balance, his work follows the natural order of Wo'unye (truths), the Lakota Lifeways, as taught through Lakota Star Knowledge. He has applied his knowledge to reduce alcoholism in reservation communities, and he is currently focusing on diabetes and cancer treatments. Charger is the great-grandson of naca Charger, whose heroic leadership in saving a group of non-Native American women and children in 1862 gave the Fool Soldiers their name.

Brian Collins

Brian Collins is the Chief Creative Officer of COLLINS, a design firm dedicated to creating communications, user interactions, and experiences that shape companies and people for the better. Previously, he led the Brand Integration Group (BIG) at Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide. Collins’ clients have included The Alliance for Climate Protection, American Express, Coca-Cola, CNN, Levi Strauss & Co., Mattel, and Motorola. His team’s North American launch of Dove’s celebrated “Campaign for Real Beauty” was honored with the Image Award from the National Organization for Women. In 2007, his team designed Helios House, the world's first LEED-certified gas station built for BP in Los Angeles.

Laura Commike Gitman

Laura Gitman spearheads BSR's corporate social responsibility initiatives in our New York office, primarily working with multinational companies in the financial services, information and communications technology (ICT), pharmaceuticals and biotech, and media and entertainment sectors. Her expertise includes responsible supply chain management, CSR strategy, stakeholder engagement and CSR reporting. She facilitates the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition, and also helps companies to advance small- and medium-enterprise development in emerging markets. Gitman also authored a report with the World Bank on CSR in China's ICT sector.

Sarah Connick

Biodiversity Manager, Corporate Health, Environment, and Safety Department • Chevron

Sarah Connick is responsible for promoting and supporting biodiversity protection and enhancement activities in association with Chevron's operations around the world. She participates in trade organization activities focused on biodiversity protection and fosters relationships with NGOs engaged in biodiversity protection. Previously, Connick was Associate Director of Sustainable Conservation, an environmental nonprofit based in San Francisco, where she developed and led partnerships with industry that focused on the development and adoption of more sustainable business practices. Connick also worked for six years at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C., where she directed science policy studies of environmental issues.

Christopher Corpuel

Vice President, Sustainability • Hilton Hotels Corporation

As Vice President, Sustainability, for Hilton Hotels Corporation (HHC), Christopher Corpuel is responsible for strategy development and implementation, integrating sustainability into HHC’s core businesses and brands worldwide. Previously, Corpuel was Director of Product Quality for the Hilton Brand Management team. He worked directly with Hilton’s franchised owners and respective management companies in the Americas on asset-related issues including capital-improvement projects, relicensing, change of ownership, conversions, and new developments. He also served as Senior Manager, Brand Project Management, for the Hilton Brand Management team.

Chris Coulter

A member of GlobeScan's management team, Chris Coulter is responsible for strategy and collaboration. He works with public affairs and communications professionals in international companies, multilateral organizations, and NGOs to help them manage their reputations, identify emerging issues, plan strategically, and develop successful initiatives and communications. He has a decade of experience in providing research-based strategic counsel to companies in the area of corporate reputation and sustainability. He regularly briefs senior decision-makers across all sectors in the area of society and business. Coulter also has substantive international experience, having worked in both the Ukraine and Korea, and for the Canadian International Development Agency.

Tom Cummings

For the last 25 years, Tom Cummings has designed and implemented strategy, change, and policy-development agendas for a range of international companies, foundations, and public agencies. Prior to ELP, Cummings held roles as a senior executive for organization, learning, and leadership development at Unilever, Shell International, and ABN AMRO Bank. Cummings also cofounded and developed three consulting practices: the Center for Strategy Research, Cambridge Energy Research Associates, and Paras-Ecos corporation. Cummings also has served as an academic at IMD International in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he codirected the Business Alliances workshop and conducted award-winning research.

Marie David

As the Director of Corporate Strategy & Sustainability for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc, Marie David works on the company’s commitment to integrate social and environmental sustainability into its business practices by focusing on three big goals: 1. to have zero waste, 2. to use 100 percent renewable energy, and 3. to bring more sustainable products and services to its customers. Before joining the sustainability team, David was Director of Social Responsibility. In this role, she engaged stakeholders in Wal-Mart’s supply chain and developed a team of associates focused on social responsibility activities and implementing development programs in Wal-Mart’s sourcing markets.

Michael De Soyza

Senior Manager, Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility • Dialog Telekom PLC

Michael de Soyza serves as the Senior Manager, Public Policy and Corporate Responsibility, at Dialog Telekom PLC. Prior to his current appointment at Dialog, he had stints in the oil and gas industry and financial services sector, where he managed programs broadly related to sustainable investment and entrepreneurship. Called 'Her Deepness' by the New Yorker and the New York Times, a 'Living Legend' by the Library of Congress, and Time magazine's first 'Hero for the Planet', Sylvia Earle is an oceanographer, explorer, author, lecturer, Explorer in Residence of the National Geographic Society, Leader of the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, Council Chair for the Harte Research Institute at Texas A & M University-Corpus Christi, Founder and Chairman of the Deep Search Foundation, and formerly the Chief Scientist of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. She has founded three companies, including Deep Ocean Exploration and Research, and served on various corporate boards. As the author of more than 170 publications, her research concerns the ecology and conservation of marine ecosystems, with special reference to marine algae and development of technology for access and research in the deep sea.

Renuka Gadde works with international agencies and governments to further Becton, Dickinson and Company’s (BD’s) agenda to upgrade medical and clinical practices via collaboration and partnerships. Gadde is also the Platform Leader responsible for the immunization and injection safety business in emerging markets. Her work involves promoting safe injection policies that protect the patient and the health care workers by introducing appropriate technologies. Richard Gillies joined Marks & Spencer in 1989 and has worked in regional roles internationally. As Operations Executive for the Clothing Division, he was able to lead a team to develop and create the new store format for Foods and Clothing. He was also responsible for the £1.5 billion store modernization program and the centralization of purchasing. Dr. Juan Gonzalez-Valero has been leading the corporate responsibility framework for Syngenta since early 2006. Michael Kobori

Mauricio Lazala

Mauricio Lazala is an international lawyer with human rights experience in Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. He currently heads the Latin America and Middle East work at the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, which tracks the positive and negative human rights impacts of 4,500 companies in more than 180 countries. Lazala monitors the conduct of hundreds of private companies and seeks companies’ responses when allegations of misbehavior are raised by civil society organizations and the media. He is also in charge of a number of sector- and issue-specific projects at the Resource Centre. Previously, Lazala was a law clerk at the International Criminal Court in the Hague and worked in Mexico for various human rights NGOs.

Virgilio Levaggi Vega joined the ILO in 1994 as Senior Specialist on Employers' Activities for Chile and MERCOSUR. He was then appointed Chief of the Programming and Technical Cooperation Unit at the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean in Lima. He later held the positions of Senior Program Analyst (HQ) and Regional Specialist on Socio-Economic Integration and Decent Work (Lima). From 2004, he was Deputy Regional Director for the Latin America and the Caribbean. Prior to joining the ILO, Levaggi Vega held various positions in enterprises, and nonprofit organizations. He also has been Chief of Cabinet of the Peruvian Prime Minister. In 1993, he was invited by the United Nations Secretary-General to become a member of the World Summit for Social Development International Team of Advisors. His opinion articles are published in several newspapers in Latin America, since 1977.

Ferdinando Villa holds a Ph.D. in theoretical ecology and had a long parallel career as a scientific software designer and engineer. After working in many fields of ecology, from theoretical island biogeography to spatially explicit decision analysis, he discovered the joys and pains of interdisciplinary research. He has since expanded the focus of his research to the interface of policy, ecology, and economics, concentrating on artificial intelligence approaches to assist environmental decision-making and natural system assessment and valuation. Villa currently leads the Artificial Intelligence for Ecosystem Services (ARIES) project, which is producing a next-generation web application meant to make environmental decisions easier and more effective. Andrew Wolfram is a Commissioner on the San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission and has more than 20 years’ experience working on the preservation and adaptive reuse of significant historic buildings. Wei Dong Zhou sets the strategic direction for all BSR projects in the emerging global economy of China. In addition to providing counsel to BSR's member companies and their supply chain partners in China, he oversees BSR's China Training Institute, which trains factory managers on CSR, health and safety, and responsible human resource practices. His clients have included the Walt Disney Company, IKEA, Levi Strauss & Co., Ann Taylor, Nordstrom, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Microsoft and China Mobile.
