Demonstrating strong and continually improving environmental, social and economic performance and communicating and engaging with a wide variety of stakeholders is essential for global corporations today. Marriott’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is continually growing and evolving as a business strategy for how the company contributes to a more sustainable future, optimizes business opportunities, minimizes risks, builds brand awareness, strengthens its reputation and engages its stakeholders. Marriott’s key stakeholders include customers/guests; the nonprofit/NGO community; associates; business partners including owners, franchisees and suppliers; hospitality and the travel & tourism industry; government; and investors.
The program specialist provides support and implementation related to CSR’s core initiatives, particularly (1) corporate contributions (2) sustainability and sustainability reporting and (3) stakeholder communications.
Specific Duties
Reporting to the Director of CSR, this position supports the Director in managing and implementing:
Corporate Contributions:
- Administer the corporate contributions program budget in concert with the department’s Senior Admin, and with the oversight and direction of the department’s Director. Evaluate, draft and manage communications for corporate contribution requests.
- Aggregate year-end contributions data and reports results, including for the company’s annual sustainability reports, the annual meeting, and a variety of surveys.
- Develop and maintain relationships with nonprofit organizations, particularly those in the greater Washington, DC area. This includes attending and networking at approximately ten annual community events and fundraising galas in the Washington DC region. Sustainability and Sustainability Reporting:
- With guidance from the Director and VP, research, identify, and help develop programs and relationships with nonprofits / NGOs and other business partners in support of Marriott’s sustainability strategy, including its natural capital resources portfolio.
- Empower and support the director in the design, writing, organizing, and overall project coordination for the annual sustainability report and CDP (formerly known as Carbon Disclosure Project).
- Support CSR stakeholder communication needs related to the company’s global green strategy, including surveys, awards and reports.
Stakeholder Communications:
This position supports internal team coordination and fulfillment for CSR.
- With guidance from the Director, prepare and potentially staff team members and select senior executives on enterprise-wide initiatives and working groups, such as the Global Green Council, World Economic Forum, Clinton Global Initiative, and International Tourism Partnership, and prepare presentations, briefing packets and itineraries for select conferences and gatherings.
- Support program and project development, including on-line research, benchmarking, internal + external video and social media content collaboration, and developing and updating presentations, program materials, key messaging, fact sheets and website content.
- Maintain master CSR calendar(s) in concert with our corporate communications and corporate social media team, and with the oversight of the CSR Director.
- Manage and respond to requests for information and funding, including sponsorships evaluated by a cross-functional team from BMSC and GCPA.
- Write select written and visual CSR content for social media channels, especially @MarriottPOV.
- Oversee the organization and fulfillment of our visual assets in support of stakeholder requests, including Marriott’s new Global Creative and Content Management Studio.
- Provide support to other team members’ projects as needed, including the “Spirit To Serve Our Communities” volunteerism program and its event logistics.
Requirements for Position:
- Minimum of one year of corporate social responsibility, business, or public relations experience; College degree required;
- Experience in environmental sustainability, sustainability reporting and communications highly preferred;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office – demonstrated expertise in PowerPoint and visual presentations plus experience working with excel to manage projects and budgets;
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill with social media;
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; presentation experience preferred.
