Responsible for leading and executing the sustainability program for global capital growth projects for the Company in the region, carrying out a range of sustainability deliverables in highly complex environments within tight timeframes. Develops and maintains the Project Development Sustainability Risk Register and associated process, facilitating use of the tool by the projects team and the resolution of often significantly challenging, co-dependent risks by closely liaising with SMEs across sustainability-related functions and broader FCX team where needed. Ensures projects comply with company policies and Responsible Production Frameworks, while aligning with/supporting localized ESIA and permitting requirements as they relate to sustainability.

Additional Responsibilities

  1. Develops and manages Project Development Sustainability Risk (PDSR) assessment processes for the assigned region. Collaborates closely with Subject Matter Experts across the business to develop often highly complex solutions, execute related action plans and transfer knowledge to project teams in dynamic and challenging environments.
  2. Develops and facilitates long term strategies for robust FPIC processes, including agreement/consent from affected Indigenous communities in partnership with other SME teams such as Social Performance, Human Rights, Native American Affairs, Environmental and Communications. Includes ensuring practices for a long-term process are institutionalized among project/operational staff. Serves as the liaison between the Projects Team as well as site and corporate sustainability SMEs and FCX leadership to ensure realistic FPIC/engagement timelines are built and implemented to meet Project and cost timelines. Supports the global SPMS team to ensure outstanding performance related to project engagement/FPIC, iteration and institutionalization of best practices.
  3. Serves as an integral part of the Capital Projects Team to develop and incorporate sustainability considerations and requirements into overall project scope, phasing, budget, and annual priorities. Works closely with applicable Environmental Permitting, Human Rights, and Social Performance Team Managers to advance integration of due diligence, Social/Human Rights Baselines and/or SIA feedback/tasks or other engagement input into PDSR Review and project processes. Requires balancing multiple challenges within higher risk projects where prioritization is critical to ensuring risks are managed in a preventative manner, integrates Copper Mark and ICMM requirements during the early stages of project development, and provides leadership to project and operations staff to enable institutionalization of critical practices.
  4. Maintains current expertise in sustainability and responsible production framework requirements such as Copper Mark, ICMM Performance Expectations, the forthcoming Consolidated Mining Standard Initiative’s standards, and International Finance Corporation, as well as Company policies and management systems and works closely with Responsible Production Frameworks & Sustainability, Social Performance and ESG Relations teams to identify trends proactively. Pays particular attention to highly sensitive issues at greater risk during growth project development such as cultural heritage/resources and ongoing best practices for impact mitigation and archaeological clearance.
  5. Works closely with Sustainability Systems team to document the PDSR and associated risks and actions in Enablon software. Collaborates to train projects and other project stakeholders (site and SME teams) to develop and advance features and use of Enablon to ensure the processes, risks and actions including FPIC are well documented.
  6. Perform other duties as requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (Sustainability, Environmental, Human Rights, International Development, Business, or related field) and ten (10) years of experience in sustainability management, social performance, human rights, environmental or related field, including project management experience; OR
  • Master’s degree in Sustainability, Environmental, Human Rights, International Development, Business, or related area and eight (8) years of experience in human rights, environmental or sustainability management or related field, including project management experience.
  • Working proficiency in English and Spanish languages.
  • Previous experience identifying and managing sustainability-related risks in a mining or extractives context.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with all levels of staff and management.
  • Proven ability to be self-directed and work independently or in a team environment.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategy across functions.
  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across multiple projects, local government relations. groups, and social, environmental and community groups.

  • Ability to strategically align project and site needs/processes with corporate needs/processes.

  • Ability to travel likely 30%-40% of the time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Business skills/acumen relevant to the mining sector.
  • On the ground human rights and/or FPIC experience in multiple international contexts.
  • On the ground ESIA experience in multiple international contexts.
